Bento Workshop

Chinese New Year is here again..Yeay!!

During my summer holiday, I had a chance to go to Singapore to have a workshop with my favourite bento idol, Little Miss Bento. I was extremely excited to finally meet her. I came across her work of bento art while I was ‘google-ing’ for bento ideas last year. Her work of art was amazing!

For the workshop, we decided on Chinese New Year themed Bento.

Here’s the cute sleeping sheep bento I learnt to make in a few hours. Time flies when you are having so much fun and I learnt heaps from my bento idol. 😉

The sheep was handmade without any mould. Everything was made of rice except for the horn, which was made of egg sheet. I learnt how to make perfect yellow eggsheet, which I cut and rolled into flowers and attached the end with pasta. I also learnt how to make the 3D carrot flowers top with a few black sesame. The sides were prepared by her. There were baked chicken, edamame, stir fry broccoli, mushroom and tofu. Lastly, I was given that special kamaboko with the picture of a sheep. I love it to the max! It is so cute!! I wish we have them here in Australia.

Happy Chinese New Year!

Seal Burger

This is my first attempt to make a sushi burger. I called my special creation ‘Seal-a-Burger’.

wpid-cymera_20140917_075417.jpg

This is very easy to make. I used basic ingredients (whatever I have in my pantry) to make the burger patty.

BURGER PATTY
• 500g ground beef
• Bacon pieces
• Worchester Sauce
• Salt and pepper
Method
1. Mix all ingredients together
2. Use the burger patty mould to make the perfect shape. Otherwise, you can just shape it using your hand.
3. Lay the burger patties on a baking tray and baked it at 200 degree celcius for about 20 minutes or until it’s done.

I used sushi rice which I’ve cooked it and shaped it like a bun for the top and bottom part of the ‘burger’. Place one of them at the bottome, add a few lettuces and sauce as you like, then put the burger patty on the lettuce. Then I cut a square norisheet (as big as the patty) and placed it on top of the patty to keep it altogether before putting the sushi rice on top.

As for this second version, I mix a bit of shaved bonito and furikake to the sushi rice before shaping it into a ‘bun’.

I used cut out cheese and norisheet for the eyes, nose and mouth.

As for the sides, I used blanched spinach top with shaved bonito, roma tomatoes and strawberries.

Here’s how it looks like when it goes into my lunchbox.

Here are all my Seal-a-Burger creation. Enjoy!

Snail Bento

“Slowly but surely…” is my motto for now 😉 and the best way to represent this motto is the snail.

Did you know? “Garden snails has a top speed of 1.3 cm per second. They don’t move fast, they do move at a very steady pace.” (Facts from Snail-World)

Winter is over and spring is here, which means, more rain and warmer days ahead. Yeay!! On rainy days, I noticed some garden snails crossing the pavement as I am walking home. Be careful not to touch them and make sure you wash your hand thoroughly if you do touch them.

Here’s my version of the snail…
image

The snail is made out of sushi roll and rice as the body of the snail. The sides are microwaved chicken karaage pieces (Yes! They are microwaved…very interesting, isn’t it?), some mixed vegetables and leftover chopped crabmeat.

image

The sushi is filled with rice, nori sheet and chopped crabmeat mixed with japanese mayonnaise and sprinkled with pepper. Normally, I make sushi rolled with seaweed. However, this time, I tried making sushi rolled with cucumber. The cucumber is quite wet so it’s quite difficult to roll the sushi tightly.

So, here’s the main ingredients for Chicken Karaage…all in that packet…cannot get any simpler than this product I found at Daiso. Such a simple and hassle-free way of cooking…recommended for busy moms 🙂 .

(Please note that the product I used is based on my own opinion.)

All I need is chicken fillet cut into little pieces, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and placed them in a plastic bag. Then pour the Karaage powdered mix into the plastic bag and shake them until all the chicken pieces are coated evenly. After that, put each chicken pieces on a microwavable plate leaving a space between each piece. Spray them with oil before putting them into the microwave for 3 – 5 minutes depending on how much chicken you have on the plate. Make sure you keep checking them. Don’t overcook it because it will become solid as a rock. (I have done this according to my own preferences and may not be following strictly to the packet’s instruction as I don’t know how to read Japanese)

So here’s how it looks like when it went into a ‘box’…

Relaxing Bears

I have been slack lately because I’ve been busy with work. I am really looking forward to a long relaxing break…”aahhh…”
image

I went to the supermarket the other day and saw this product on the shelf. It’s a can of Angus Beef and Red Wine soup. Quick and easy soup for busy weeknights 😛 .

(Please note that the product I used is based on my own opinions.)

I can smell the wine from the soup (So, supposedly it’s not suitable for young children :-p ). The overall taste is actually quite nice. I sauted (a whole) chopped onion with a bit of olive oil before adding the can of soup and sprinkled a bit of salt and pepper. Then, I made some cute bears, to slide down the bowl, which are made of mashed potatoes. I used cut out cheese to decorate the soup. Lastly, I used cut out nori sheet for their facial expressions.

Here are the cute bears indulging in their hot soup…

Guten Appetit! Enjoy the rest of your week!

Weekends are sacred for me. They are the perfect time to relax and spend time with my family and friends.
